New Monthly Comedy Show: “Tough Stuff” with Kevin Ryan & Sidney Gantt

Tough Stuff Facebook

Kevin Ryan and Sidney Gantt are teaming up to bring Philadelphia a great new monthly comedy show. Each month the Tough Stuff Comedy Show will feature stand up comics from Philly and New York telling their jokes – with a little twist. Some comics will perform their best material, and then sit down with Kevin and Sidney to tell a crazy story that will be comedically dissected by the hosts, with a little help from the audience.

Kevin and Sidney will be co-hosting the show, which should make for an interesting night – since they are sworn enemies, yet somehow still good friends. With awesome stand up comics Alex Grubard, Mary Radzinski, H. Foley, and Chris Cotton the story segment of the show is bound to be a highlight.

Are we really still doing this? Yes. Comediand Chris Cotton, Dave Temple, and myself are here yet again to pester you about our podcast.

This time we record with frequent guest Derek Gaines to talk about Valentine’s Day, Chris’ asshole-like personality traits, and other stuff that comes up (as you can see by the patterns, our podcast is very impromtu, but we never have a lack of topics to discuss).

I’m also working on getting all of the previous episodes posted so everyone could go back and listen to particular episodes. We’ll also be periodically releasing our previous podcasts on youtube to give our listeners another way to listen to us. Of course, you can always listen to our podcast on this site or on Soundcloud.com or download the soundcloud app for Apple and Android devices. Just look up our username ‘PhillyComedy’.

Please enjoy episode 9 of the “Always Funny in Philadelphia” podcast with guest Derek Gaines.

Kevin Hart’s “Plastic Cup Boyz” coming back to Philly

133187a

Kevin Hart has been on the road non-stop for the past few years, breaking box office and ticket sale records with his first feature-length comedy special Laugh at My Pain that hit theaters for it’s well-received release. Now that Kev is setting his sights even higher with his new Let Me Explain special (hitting theaters this 4th of July weekend) and moving on to feature-length films, he’s still not done bringing grade-A comedy to his fans.

Kevin Hart’s opening acts for his past tours are know as “The Plastic Cup Boyz,” and is made of some of Philadelphia’s other comedy giants such as Will “Spank” Horton, Na’im Lynn, Harry Rathford, and Joey Wells. Since Kevin will be busy with other endeavors he’s going to send out the PCBs for another tour, and Philadelphia, of course, is one of their stops.

The PCB will be playing the Tower Theater in Upper Darby on Saturday, March 9th at 8 PM. You can get tickets here.

Comedian Article: Motivations of a Comedian By Dave Temple

Comedian Dave Temple

Comedian Dave Temple

Dave Temple is not only a been someone who I’ve been working a lot with recently, but he’s also a comic that myself and a bunch of other comedians have noticed that has gotten significantly better in his comedy, as well as how serous he’s been taking it (he was recently featured in our ‘Comedians to Watch in 2013′ article where Clint Coley praised his talent).

I asked Dave to write an article for the site to give an insight to other comics who may be looking for a little inspiration in terms of keeping at it. Let me know if it was helpful!

Motivations of a Stand Up

By Dave Temple

Comedians are modern day philosophers. We analyze our knowledge of life, present our understanding of ethics, religion, metaphysics and more. Veteran comedians have helped develop younger comedians similar to Socrates developing Plato.
Some audiences take our message with a grain of salt while others gain outlook that changes their way of thinking.
My present motivations as a stand up are rejuvenated with the realization that I have a tool and opportunity to create a body of work that can shape thoughts. I am a modern day philosopher.

I wanted to study philosophy in college. I didn’t out of fear that I would never find a job as a philosopher upon graduation. I chose seemingly more secure genres of study in Mathematics and Economics.

I blindly gravitated to a hobby of stand up comedy while working various jobs in my “field”. At the time I had no idea that I was actually on track to become what I wanted to be all along, a Philosopher.

I have been doing stand up since 2006. I have worked a series of high-level professional jobs along the way. The aspect of stand up that drove me toward a fulltime stand up career was the honesty. Most jobs require you to present yourself with a demeanor that’s appropriate for the situation. Often that demeanor is expected outside the workplace too, and it can consume your TRUE identity.

Stand up allows you to express your most honest thoughts and opinions.
Like other jobs, in stand up your demeanor on stage is also expected outside the workplace. The more honest you are with your audience the more honest you can be in your life. I love the freedom stand up has given me to be honest with myself and with everyone I encounter.

The realization that I am pursing my original goal to be a philosopher is the best motivation to continue doing what I do. As my world of comedy expands I surround myself with some of the best comedians around. I’m earning the respect and admiration of comedians/philosopher I respect and admire. I’m ascending into a category of not just being funny but talking about something relevant.
Are the topics I think about relevant to anyone else? Can I reach people? Is it funny? I will find out, and you will too as you see and hear more from Stand up comedian/Philosopher Dave Temple.

It’s time again for another episode of our ‘Always Funny’ podcast! This episode was recorded at my house with Chris Cotton and Dave Temple (and my dog, Carlin, who was giving Dave a hard time by consistantly jumping on his nuts). We decided to give the quieter setting a try being that we usually have to borderline yell when we record at our favorite restaurants.

Enjoy!

Featured Comedian: Anthony Moore

Comedian Anthony Moore

I thought that it would be fitting to give the year’s first “Featured Comedian” spot to a promising young comic who graduated with flying colors in comedian TuRae’s comedy class.

Anthony Moore is a regular at the Laff House comedy club as well as other spots in the city. He’s not afraid to try new material as well as try that material out at new spots. His delivery is consistent and his subject matter is maturing at a steady pace.

Check out the following clip of Anthony Moore’s set:

Breast Cancer Awareness Show: Open Casting Call

I recently received and email from the people over at Zeta Tau Alpha from the University of Pennsylvania that they are currently looking for a few comedians who would be willing to donate a ten-fifteen minute set for their fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen foundation in hopes to raise awareness of breast cancer.

As a person who knows breast cancer survivors (as well as someone who lost their battle with it) I was more than happy to help them in their cause. If you’re a comedian and would like to donate a small set to this show, please read the following from their representative.

Seeking comedians to donate their time to a charity event! Zeta Tau Alpha will host a comedy show at the University of Pennsylvania on March 23rd at 8PM. All proceeds from the show will be donated to support breast cancer awareness and education through the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Think Pink. We are looking for acts about fifteen minutes long of any kind. Please contact Rosanna Sobota at rosanna.sobota@gmail.com if you are interested in performing.

I hope all can donate some time or attend this event. Visit this site for updates on the show.

Thanks!

New Podcast Episode!

20130123-140244.jpg

Because I’m such a layman when it comes to something as simple as posting sounds on the internet, it’s been a minute since I’ve posted a new episode of our podcast.

After doing a little bit of research as to why our previous episodes were being deleted every so often (and finding a much better app to post them with), Chris Cotton and I have successfully posted a new episode on our SoundCloud page!

In this episode, Chris and I record an in-depth conversation we had on our recent trip to New York. You’ll hear us talk about weird behaviors in certain groups of people, as well as our thoughts on being a cocky comic. You can listen below!

Since we have a limit as to how much audio we can have on our page at one time, be sure to listen to this episode before we post another episode (within the next week). And remember, you can listen to our podcast on the go by downloading the SoundCloud app for Apple and Android devices! Just search our username “PhillyComedy”.

Thanks for listening and being patient! More episodes to come!
