Without going to far into it, we’ve decided to finally make some much needed improvements to our podcast (hosted by myself and comedians Chris Cotton and Dave Temple). As you may or may not know, our podcast often experienced some technical difficulties with being posted or accessed on the web. It’s mainly because of this that we decided to join the 21st century and make our podcast a little more accessible on Podbean.com (where the fellas over at cheapodcast host their podcast) as well as submitting it on iTunes. In this episode, Chris, Dave, and myself get back together after a short hiatus and discuss what we’ve been up to over the past couple of weeks. As you may or may not know, a lot of the local comedians in the area (as well as one’s now working all over the country) have taken a comedy workshop with Philadelphia comedy icon Tu Rae Gordon. I’ve posted articles on this workshop before, but now it’s time for another class to make their way to the Laff House comedy club and kick start their comedy careers (or at least improve the material they already have).

This workshop is for comedians of all levels of experience and although Tu Rae may not write your jokes for you (why would he?) he’ll absolutely show you how to improve the delivery of your sense of humor in a more clear, precise method.

TONIGHT AT THE TROCADERO THEATER

Philly Comic (and my neighbor) Alejandro Morales is throwing an event that I would have posted a little earlier on the site, but I wanted to start experimenting with post times for shows to see if what time frames had the best effect for gaining exposure (that and I lost the email that Alejandro had sent me in the first place).

Local comedy in Philadelphia is rarely thrown in big venues like the Troc, so it’s no surprise that an event like this would gain my attention. This show features some of my favorite local comics like Mary Radzinski and John Nunn, and the fact that it’s only five bucks makes it that much better. Throw in a few drinks followed by an after-show dinner at one of the many Chinese food restaurants nearby (it’s in Chinatown) and you got yourself an awesome evening.

So if you’re not doing anything (chances are you’re not… it’s a fucking Wednesday) put that open mic on hold this week and go check out this show. If not for the sake of live comedy in Philadelphia, then at least do it for me. Alejandro lives literally two houses down from me and it would totally awkward if this site didn’t help in any way.

Comedy nerds, rejoice! Philadelphia’s comedy scene keeps growing, as bigger and bigger names perform here with each passing month. The city’s latest big get (according to a promo vid released by Meathook Comedy) is Dan St. Germain (Best Week Ever, Jimmy Fallon, Comedy Central Half Hour). Dan will be headlining a special one-night event at Connie’s Ric Rac. The show takes place Monday, March 18th at 8PM. Tickets are just $10.

This will be Dan St. Germain’s first performance in Philadelphia this year, and the ONLY one for the foreseeable future. He’ll be closing out a hot show featuring hand-picked comics from both Philadelphia and Boston. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit MeathookComedy.com.

Just in case you didn’t see it this morning, the Philly comedy scene has been gaining some well-deserved momentum and was featured on the front page of this morning Philadelphia Inquirer (underlined, right?). You can either contribute to print media by purchasing a copy or help the newspaper reach it’s inevitable demise by reading it on their website. The choice is yours.

Congrats to all the comics, venues, and shows mentioned in the article. It’s really cool to even be a part of something like our comedy scene. I don’t know of too many cities that have one like ours.

When I first started to really get into comedy, it was Lewis Black’s cynical sense of humor that I immediately clicked with. After watching  him on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,  I went out and bought his CDs and he easily became one of my favorite comedians of all time. It goes without saying that I’m excited that he’s finally coming to perform in Philadelphia being that he usually comes to obscure Pennsylvania venues when his tour comes around these parts.

It’s a little short notice in terms of this site, and if you have tickets you probably bought the a while back, but if you’re up to it seeing Lewis Black is a one of a kind experience and I highly recomend it. Although there aren’t too many good ones to go around, tickets are still on sale. You can buy them here.

Lewis Black will be performing at the Academy of Music in center city on Friday, February 22nd (tomorrow) at 8 PM. The tickets that are available are ranging around $55.

If Kevin Hart hasn’t already proved himself to be on the most prominent comedians of all time, he’ll make sure he proves that when he hosts Saturday Night Live on March 2nd, as reported by numerous news sources.

According to the reports made online, and a confirmation on his twitter account, Kevin will host the legendary comedy program with musical guests Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis. This will be Kevin’s first time as a host on SNL, and I’m sure he’s going to make it a special episode, being that his comedic idol (Eddie Murphy) is an alumni of the show. Kev will now join the elite group of stand-up comedians who have reached the level success to host the program (George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K. and others).

I just hope that Kevin will be given some creative control in the writing process as I’m sure that he’ll remember to rep Philadelphia in some way, and maybe, just maybe, incorperate some Philly-bred comedians in the sketches.
