I’ve been keeping an eye on a select group of comedians who have been coming up in the comedy scene over 2011 and if this is what Philly comedy looks like now, then 2012 is going to be an amazing year.
Here’s a list of comedians to keep an eye out for in 2012:
Kevin Ryan
In the scene for about a hear and a half, Kevin Ryan has his set down to the exact tone that he wants it. His stage presence is impressive and his subject matter is universally appealing. This comedian is definitely safe to put on any stage.

Shawn Jackson
Known to be in the comedy scene for a good while, 2011 was be year that Shawn J Jackson has evolved into a hands-down professional. As fluid on stage as he is comfortable, Shawn knows exactly where his material kills, and gets straight to the point with his punchlines. 2012 can very well be the year this comic becomes full-time.

Reggie Conquest
It’s arguable that Reggie Conquest is having the most fun in his rise as a professional comedian. Coming from the same class as I did in TuRae’s comedy workshop and making it to first place on the new faces of comedy competition, I personally know that this comic is as genuine on stage as he is off of it. Reggie is certainly making his mark on the scene, being accepted on stages all over the city. Big things are in his future if he keeps up this pace.

Alex Grubard
Being as desensitized as I’ve been to live comedy at times, it’s always refreshing to see a local comic who legitimately cracks me up. I was fortunate to meet Alex outside the clubs and was more than happy with my decision in asking him to do time on my stage. Quick, witty, and an enthusiast of call-backs, he’s definitely one I see getting a great deal of work in 2012. Don’t just take my word on it. See him for yourself.

John Nunn
When John Nunn gets on stage, he gets straight to the point and gets to the jokes. I was impressed by his ability to make a crowd laugh almost as soon as he got on stage. With a witty, almost dark perspective on everyday life, his style of writing is unique to say the least.

This list of comedians is my first draft pick of Philly comedy in the 2012 season. Keep an eye out for them!
